Open Question

Had a debate with my parents tonight about the question of Sex Education in schools, wanted to throw it up here and see what comes of it.

I know I don’t have a ton of readers to make this anywhere near exciting, but we’ll try it out anyways.

So here’s the question:

Should public school systems be required to teach sex education, and if so, should they be required to follow an abstinence only program or a program that encorporates safe sex as well.

I'm not entirely sure if schools SHOULD teach sex education, but if they're going to, they shouldn't just teach abstinence. It's not much of an education if they do, you know? It's like, "Oh, don't have sex," and of COURSE kids are going to have sex - some of 'em, anyway - and then what? If their parents haven't talked to them and if their school hasn't taught them anything useful, they'll be going by what the media and Juno has to say.

You can not impose morality on people or shame them for the lack thereof. You can teach them the advantages of moral choices. (If we don't show them, who will?) The choice can only be made when all sides are understood. V.
  • Good thoughts everyone.
ATBS- I think everyone makes their own choices whether we want them to or not, and they only way someone can make a good choice is if they can see the entire truth.
I'll take that as pro-teaching everything including abstinence. And as far as Bob Dole goes... sounds delicious, so much better than the idea they had in Girl Next Door.

Grandparents- Dinner with friends of the Obama's? Does that lead to dinner with the Obama's?
Anyways, in the serious issue: Why should there have to be a choice? The common theme I'm hearing as to why not, is the imposition of morality (or I guess in this case the lack thereof?) on other people.

Watchman- Did the program you were involved with mention safe sex? (Not counting abstinence, even though yes, it is the safest version)

Currently just ask the Spears and Palins how abstinence works? Safe sex works. Remember, more people are caused by accident, than with a plan. And ignoring the issue will never solve the issue. Education at least gives them the right tools and puts them on the right path. The rest belongs to the parents that are suppose to be governing and guiding them.
  • Since everyone else is double commenting, I will also. We should have a curriculum that presents all the options for sexuality. Abstinence is 100% free from pregnancy, STDs, and STIs. HOwever, we should also educate kids about drawing boundaries, date rape, and genital hygiene.
  • I had the privilege of working with a non-profit that offered curriculum supplements to public schools. We educated students and teachers about STD statistics, etc. We were abstinence based, but the knowledge of sex and sexuality certainly impressed the kids and got them thinking twice. Their ignorance was breathtaking!

"Wait, you mean to tell me that you can get and STD from Oral sex?"
"Teacher, are you for real when you say that there is no cure for herpes?"
"WHAT! You can get bugs down there!?!"

Anyway, nobody else is educating these kids. If we can't stop them from doing the deed, we may as well educate them about the consequences and dangers.

Boy, you don't want me to come over there and wash your mouth out, what is all this talk of sex? Can violence be far behind?......Yikes! Now even I said "behind"! See what you have started!.... Oh! it is raining here in Chicago and I guess I could be over reacting. But keep it clean or I'm out of here!

Public schools can barely teach students to read, so how can we ever hope they can teach students life skills? Teen pregnancy is a situation that has become "cute" and "cool" because of media images and reporting. So my answer to the question is, public schools should be required to teach sex education and to teach both abstinence and safe sex. Why should there have to be a choice? This message is brought to you by Veronica, working at Prescotts lap top. We are in Chicago and last night we had dinner with the Obamas down-the-street neighbors, the McGees. Turns out they are very nice people. ( the Obamas and the Mcgees). So glad you are back to blogging. I've missed it. I'm thinking about the Church numbers issue and I very much agree with Beckys (the wife) response. Love you, V
  • Oh, did you mean seriously? ...
I think everyone makes their own choices whether we want them to or not, and they only way someone can make a good choice is if they can see the entire truth.
  • I think they should make a video series to be shown in all public schools starring Bob Dole and Nick Chapman doing the music.
